A study done by Columbia University investigated 111 women taking bisphosphonates including Fosamax. Their studies demonstrated that early on in therapy patients showed marked improvement in bone structure but after long-term use bone structure diminished. Further studies conducted at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York observed 21 women who had femur fractures. Twelve of these patients who had been on bisphosphonates for over eight years demonstrated reduced bone mass as compared
to the
other 9 patients who did not take bisphosphonates. Additionally, the Annals of Internal Medicine reported that bisphosphonates like Fosamax behave more like a bone hardener than a bone builder. They have also observed that bone becomes brittle over time with the use of Fosamax.

In 2008, researchers published a study in the May/June issue of the
Journal of Orthopedic Trauma that found a femur fracture
pattern that was 98% specific to users of Fosamax . The study reviewed 70
low-energy femur fractures that were typically caused by falls from a standing
height or less. The study was able to identify a specific type of fracture that
occurred almost exclusively in women who had been taking Fosamax over a long
period of time.
Osteonecrosis of the hip is the most common form of joint necrosis. The permanent hip bone decay causes severe pain, reduced mobility and could weaken the bones to the point that they collapse on themselves. Avasular necrosis of the hip can occur naturally, but some studies suggest that Fosamax side effects could increase the risk of the debilitating condition, and potential lawsuits are being evaluated nationwide for individuals diagnosed with osteonecrosis of the hip.
The femur, or thigh bone, is one of the strongest bones in the human body.
However, side effects of Fosamax may weaken the ability of the bone to repair
itself from microdamage, increasing the risk of a bone fracture over time.
Although studies and numerous cases of Fosamax fractures have been reported,
Merck & Co. failed to adequately research their popular osteoporosis drug or
warn about this potential Fosamax problem.

FOSAMAX BROKEN BONE LAWYERS
On March 2010, the FDA began a safety review of Fosamax to determine whether or not there is an increase in the risk of bone fractures. The agency is investigating the possible link between Fosamax and fractures that occur below the hip joint on patients who have been on bisphosphonates for several years. The investigation is still on going but the FDA suggests that for patients who are currently on bisphosphonates should continue therapy but should make sure they talk to their healthcare providers
if they develop any symptoms.
If you have experienced a Fosamax femur fracture or any other bone related illness while on Fosamax, you may be entitled to financial compensation for pain and suffering, lost wages and medical expenses. You might want to speak with a Fosamax attorney to see if you qualify for a Fosamax lawsuit. Fosamax lawsuits are currently being filed across the country.
Fosamax is an oral bisphosphonate medication prescribed to treat osteoporosis. The drug inhibits bone turnover, which is designed to reduce the risk of fractures. However, long-term use could lead to a gradual decay of bone in the jaw, hip, knee or shoulder as a side effect of Fosamax.
In April 2006, a federal Fosamax dangers jaw osteonecrosis lawsuit was filed against Merck. This
lawsuit alleges that Fosamax is a defective drug, which causes more harm
(osteonecrosis) than benefit (limited bone protection). This Fosamax claim also
alleged that Merck intentionally concealed the risks of Fosamax from the public.
Additional, the suit argues that Merck has failed to comply with the FDAs
request to add a ONJ warning to all Fosamax labeling.
Attorneys in the Fosamax dangers lawsuit are seeking class action status to represent
the millions of people who have taken this drug, thousands of which have
suffered serious injuries.

Fosamax Low energy femur fractures / Thigh Bone Break
Fosamax has also been linked to low energy femur fractures (thigh bone fractures).
A study in the May/June 2008 issue of the Journal of Orthopedic Trauma links Merck’s osteoporosis drug Fosamax to a rare type of fracture in the femur. The study looked at 70 patients who experienced low-energy femur fractures, which occur when someone falls from a standing height or less. Twenty-five patients (36%) were taking Fosamax for four years or more on average.
The Fosamax patients’ fractures also have some distinct characteristics. The study shows that 76% of the 25 patients had a simple fracture with a straight line across the bone. Also, a beak-like overhang on one side of the bone was observed. Furthermore, the patients’ bones didn’t look like typical osteoporotic bone; it appeared strong.
The femur, or thigh bone, is one of the strongest bones in the human body. However, side effects of Fosamax may weaken the ability of the bone to repair itself from microdamage, increasing the risk of a bone fracture over time.
Although studies and numerous cases of Fosamax fractures have been reported, Merck & Co. failed to adequately research their popular osteoporosis drug or warn about this potential Fosamax problem.
Evidence has also revealed that Fosamax dangers can increase the risk of jaw osteonecrosis, a serious bone disease of the jaw (ONJ). According to experts in the field, ONJ is a condition in which the bone tissue in the jaw fails to heal after minor trauma such as a tooth extraction, causing the bone to be exposed. This exposure can lead to infection, fracture, and extensive tissue death, requiring long-term antibiotic use or surgery to correct.
The dangers of osteonecrosis of the jaw as a Fosamax adverse side
effect is increased the longer the medication is used. Many users are
prescribed the osteoporosis medication for long periods of time, since it needs
to continue to be taken to prevent bone deterioration. As a result, dentists
have seen a significant increase over the past five years in the occurrence of
jaw necrosis as a side effect of Fosamax dangers.
Today the FDA has announced that it is updating the public regarding information
previously communicated describing the risk of atypical fractures of the thigh,
known as subtrochanteric and diaphyseal femur fractures, in patients who take
bisphosphonates for osteoporosis. This information will be added to the Warnings
and Precautions section of the labels of all bisphosphonate drugs approved for
the prevention or treatment of osteoporosis including Fosamax, Fosamax Plus D,
Actonel, Actonel with Calcium, Boniva, Atelvia, and Reclast (and their generic
products). A Medication Guide, describing the symptoms of femur fracture will be
required to be given to patients when the pick up their prescription. According
to the FDA, these actions are part of an ongoing safety review of bisphosphonate
use and the occurrence of atypical subtrochanteric and diaphyseal femur
fractures, as previously announced in a Drug Safety Communication on March 10,
2010.
